DENVER, June 19, 2013 – Catholic Relief Services (CRS) announced the recipients of the first annual Egan Journalism Fellowship, which recognizes journalists who have demonstrated excellence in their reporting for Catholic media in the United States. The announcement came on the first day of the 2013 Catholic Media Conference, the premier national gathering of Catholic journalists.
The 2013 fellows are:

- Kerry Weber, associate editor at America magazine
- Michelle Bauman of Catholic News Agency/EWTN
- Ron Lajoie of Catholic New York
The selected fellows will travel with CRS to Rwanda in the fall to witness firsthand the work of CRS and the Catholic Church on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. CRS has been active in Rwanda since 1960 and began an immediate response to the emergency needs of the ravaged country following the 1994 genocide. Today, CRS and the Church continue their work in Rwanda in a number of sectors, including peacebuilding, agriculture, health and microfinance.
The new Egan Journalism Fellowship format builds on the aim of previous Egan Award competitions to foster increased international reporting in Catholic media, and to educate members of the Catholic community in the United States about their role in living a life of solidarity with others.
