Reaching the Unchurched in a Culture of Relativism
Featuring Tamra Hull Fromm
When Christianity is seen as just another narrative, how do we proclaim it is Truth? Scripture professor Tamra Hull Fromm describes her research into pre-evangelizing young adult “native nones” and shares insight from God’s approach to Moses and Paul’s address to the Gentiles in Acts 17. She also explains how to read the Bible in a Catholic way; why she loves the image of Scripture as food; and the value of the Old Testament to understanding the faith.
Tamra Hull Fromm, PhD, is an instructor with the Catholic Biblical School of Michigan, a faculty member with Catholic Distance University, and an associate lecturer with Maryvale Institute. She is the author of Pre-Evangelization and Young Adult “Native Nones”: A New Paradigm for Reaching the Unchurched (Wipf and Stock Publishers) and blogs regularly on scripture and evangelization at Novo-Areopagus: Pre-Evangelization for a Postmodern World.
Take Tamra’s favorite Scripture to your next Holy Hour
Pray: Come, Holy Spirit, open my heart and mind to hear your word today.
Read the Word: Psalm 37:4—or this whole passage, verses 3–9
(Read it in your own Bible to get the context, and so you can make notes)
3 “Trust in the Lord, and do good;
so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security.
4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
6 He will bring forth your vindication as the light,
and your right as the noonday.
7 Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over him who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!
8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
9 For the wicked shall be cut off;
but those who wait for the Lord shall possess the land.”
Ponder the Word: Read several times, lingering where it touches your heart. What catches your attention? What do you hear the Lord saying to you?
Pray with the Word: Bring to the Lord what you have heard, and talk to him about it. Ask for his grace. Thank him for his loving care.
Live the Word: How does what you read touch your life? What can you do this week to put it into practice?
