Learn to Pray the Scriptural Rosary

Featuring Susan Wallace

October 5, 2023 | 36 min.

Are you looking for a way to pray with scripture? The “scriptural rosary” is a beautiful way to draw you deeper into the mysteries of the gospel and closer to Jesus and Mary. Susan Wallace tells how circumstances drew her into a relationship with the Blessed Mother and describes how praying the Scriptural Rosary helped slow down and deepen her prayer life. She and Sarah close the episode by praying a decade together, providing a model to follow.

Susan Wallace is chief marketing and communications officer at Holy Cross Family Ministries, which continues the mission of Father Patrick Peyton, CSC, sharing his message, “The family that prays together stays together.” They offer free inspirational resources to help families pray at www.familyrosary.org. Susan is a member of the board of directors at Ave Maria Press and contributed instructions for praying the Scriptural Rosary to the Living the Word Catholic Women’s Bible.

Pray a Decade of the Scriptural Rosary with Susan

Pray: Pray a decade of the Scriptural Rosary along with Susan and Sarah as you listen to this episode, meditating on the Scriptures read at the start of each bead, or follow the instructions below

5th Luminous Mystery, The Institution of the Eucharist [Jn 6:35-40]

Make the Sign of the Cross and pray the Apostles' Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the God the Father Almighty; from there he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Announce the 5th Luminous Mystery: The Institution of the Eucharist

Recite the Our Father: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Meditate on the Scripture given with each bead as you recite the Hail Mary:

“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life;… (Jn 6:35)

Recite the Hail Mary: Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

… he who comes to me shall not hunger,… (Jn 6:35)

Hail Mary…

… and he who believes in me shall never thirst. (Jn 6:35)

Hail Mary…

… But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. (Jn 6:36)

Hail Mary…

All that the Father gives me will come to me;… (Jn 6:37)

Hail Mary…

… and him who comes to me I will not cast out. (Jn 6:37)

Hail Mary…

For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me; (Jn 6:38)

Hail Mary…

…and this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. (Jn 6:39)

Hail Mary…

For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; … (Jn 6:40)

Hail Mary…

… and I will raise him up on the last day.’” (Jn 6:40)

Hail Mary…

Pray the Glory Be: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Pray the Hail Holy Queen: Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, O most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Make the Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
