Getting to Know Saint Matthew
Featuring Meg Hunter-Kilmer
Have you ever stopped to think about why Jesus called people who may have despised each other to be in his inner circle—and what effect that may have had on their ministry? Meg Hunter-Kilmer explains why she loves “Matthew the man” and how the radical power of grace transformed him and impacted the gospel that bears his name. Learn why we should care about all of the Old Testament references there, and why we might want to read a whole gospel when we hear it each Sunday at Mass.
Meg Hunter-Kilmer is a Catholic speaker, author, retreat leader, and itinerant missionary whose work appears regularly on Aleteia and on her blog, Held by His Pierced Hands. She contributed the Introduction to Matthew’s Gospel and more than a dozen other intros and essays to the Living the Word Catholic Women’s Bible.
Her books include Pray for Us: 75 Saints Who Sinned, Suffered, and Struggled on Their Way to Holiness.

Take Meg’s favorite Scripture to your next Holy Hour
Pray: Come, Holy Spirit, open my heart and mind to hear your word today.
Read the Word: Matthew 11:28–30
(Read it in your own Bible to get the context, and so you can make notes)
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Ponder the Word: Read several times, lingering where it touches your heart. What catches your attention? What do you hear the Lord saying to you?
Pray with the Word: Bring to the Lord what you have heard, and talk to him about it. Ask for his grace. Thank him for his loving care.
Live the Word: How does what you read touch your life? What can you do this week to put it into practice?
