The Radical Choice to Trust
Featuring Shannon Wimp-Schmidt
What do spiritual vitality, understanding difficult Bible passages, and radical faith all have in common? A relationship with Jesus grounded in scripture, according to Shannon Wimp-Schmidt. The coauthor of Fat Luther, Slim Pickin's and cohost of the Plaid Skirts and Basic Black podcast talks with Sarah Christmyer about renewing our parishes, finding relevance in ancient texts, and learning from biblical women who live on the outskirts but who make radical choices to trust in God.
Shannon Wimp-Schmidt, parish vitality coordinator for the Archdiocese of Chicago, is coauthor of the book Fat Luther, Slim Pickin's: a Black Catholic Celebration of Faith, Tradition, and Diversity, cohost of the podcast Plaid Skirts and Basic Black, and a founding member of Catholics United for Black Lives. She contributed several essays to the Living the Word Catholic Women’s Bible, including portraits of Anna, Jephthah’s Daughter, and the Syrophoenician Woman.

Pray: Come, Holy Spirit, open my heart and mind to hear your word today.
Read the Word: John 1:1–5, 9–14
(Read it in your own Bible so you can make notes.)
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. […]
“The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only-begotten Son from the Father.”
Ponder the Word: Read the passage several times, lingering where it touches your heart. What catches your attention? What do you hear the Lord saying to you?
Pray with the Word: Bring to the Lord what you have heard and talk to him about it. Ask for his grace. Thank him for his loving care.
Live the Word: How does what you read touch your life? What can you do this week to put it into practice?
