June 8, 2023 | 39 min.

How can we respond to challenges and ethical dilemmas with goodness and trust? In this episode, Sarah Christmyer talks with Maria Morera Johnson—author ofMy Badass Book of Saints—about three pairs of women in the Old Testament: Potiphar’s wife and Susannah; Jezebel and Esther; and Lot’s wife and Martha. Learn how these biblical heroines and bad girls still speak to us today.

Take Maria’s Favorite Scripture to Your Next Holy Hour

Pray: Come, Holy Spirit, open my heart and mind to hear your word today.

Read the Word: Psalm 37

(Just those verses we prayed with are repeated below. Maria recommends you read the entire psalm and then focus on what speaks most to you. Read it in your own Bible to get the context, and so you can make notes)

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security.
Take delight in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act. […]

The steps of a man are from the Lord,
    and he establishes him in whose way he delights;
though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong,
    for the Lord is the stay of his hand. […]

Depart from evil, and do good;
    so shall you abide forever. (Psalm 37:3–5, 23–24, 27)

Ponder the Word: Read several times, lingering where it touches your heart. Notice both the imperatives (what the Psalmist says to do) and the promised results. What catches your attention? What do you hear the Lord saying to you?

Pray with the Word: Bring to the Lord what you have heard, and talk to him about it. Ask for his grace. Thank him for his loving care.

Live the Word: How does what you read touch your life? What can you do this week to put it into practice?
